Good comics that I haven't read: the impossible task!
I like reading comic books. There have been some tremendously great runs by various authors, and some tremendously great stories to come out of comic books. There's just one problem.

I think I read them all.

So here's where you folks come in. I need someone to recommend to me a comic book run, series, or story that I haven't read yet. It must meet the following criteria:

1. It must be good. If you recommend something that sucks, has been written by Jeph Loeb (yes, that's includes his Batman stuff), was drawn by Greg Land, or features ridiculous levels of pornographic violence that would make japanese manga artists cringe (Garth Ennis), then don't bother.

2. The longer the better. I like long runs. The five year arc of Fables was great, although I stopped reading it once the arc was over. Ultimate Spider-Man and Bendis's Daredevil were great. Grant Morrison on just about anything is great.

3. It doesn't all need to be by one author. If the series is good, I'll read even if the author changes.

4. I can't have read it already. This is the hard part. I've read a LOT of comics. I mean a lot. I've read the entire Amazing Spider-Man and Uncanny X-Men runs, save for the dark ages of the 90s where I gave up on X-men. I've read almost everything by Grant Morrison, Bendis, Johns, Kyle and Yost, Brian K. Vaughan, and Peter David, and am in the process of reading the rest.

So below the cut is a list of all the things I've read. If you manage to find something good that's not already on that list, you will gain my very fickle and soon-forgotten gratitude.

Keep in mind that as long as this list is, it's not everything. It's also not necessarily things I like. Just stuff I've read. I'll try to comment on things that are particularly good in my eyes.

Powers (never finished it)

The Invisibles (in the process of reading)

Pretty much all X-men books (Astonishing, Morrison and Kyle/Yost New X-men being the best)

Pretty much all Spider-Man books

Every Ultimate book (USM and Ultimates being the best)

All-Star Superman

Dark Knight Returns (overrated and not very good)

Batman Year One (just overrated)

Jeph Loeb's Batman stuff, Long Halloween etc (you're remembering it wrong. It sucks. Trust me.)

Superman/Batman

Grant Morrison's JLA followed by Mark Waid's JLA

Geoff Johns' Justice Society (very good)

Geoff Johns' Green Lantern (good)

Almost anything ever related even peripherally to Crisis on Infinite Earths

Geoff Johns' Booster Gold (very good)

Volume 2 of Daredevil from Kevin Smith to the middle of Ed Brubaker's run (Bendis' run being
definitive, as far as I'm concerned)

Captain America volume 5 up until very recently when I finally decided once and for all that I don't like Brubaker.

Fifty-Two (good)

New Avengers (good overall, sometimes wanes a bit)

Mighty Avengers (pretty good)

Annihilation, including Conquest and War of Kings (DnA rock my socks.)

Morrison's Batman, but I purposefully ignore all other incarnations since he's the only one who write Batman perfectly, with Geoff Johns a distant second.

Runaways, but I gave up during Terry Moore's run. (BKV volumes are amazing)

Planet Hulk (Perhaps one of my top 5 favorite comics ever)

World War Hulk (could never live up to Planet Hulk)

Jeph Loeb's Hulk (single handedly ruined Planet Hulk and anything else Hulk related, possibly for all time.)

Incredible Hercules (I am routinely shocked by how much I love this book)

Portions of Peter David's Hulk run

Current incarnation of X-Factor, which I don't consider an X-men book.

Final Crisis, including Superman Beyond WHICH MUST BE READ AS PART OF THAT SERIES, BECAUSE IT IS WHAT MAKES THAT EVENT AWESOME.

Secret Invasion (Meh, with an ugh for Lentil's confusing art.)

Civil War (Meh, bordering on ugh.)

Identity Crisis (Meh, bordering on ugh.)

Kingdom Come (Quite good)

Green Arrow: Year One (Surprisingly good)

Sandman (Overrated at some portions, underrated at others)

Lucifer (Much better than Sandman)

The first 20 issues or so of Hellblazer (I still can't get past Jamie Delano's run to get to all the good authors)

Fables (stopped reading it after the 5 year arc was over)

About six issues of Jack of Fables (Stopped reading because it sucked)

Rising Stars (good but never lived up to potential)

Midnight Nation (Very cool)

JMS' Thor (Slow and now will never really be finished)

About ten issues of Immortal Iron Fist (Kind of okay for a while)

Guardians of the Galaxy current incarnation (Again: DnA rock my socks)

Nova (Ditto)

Ellis's run on the Authority, as well as about half of Millar's run (Good, especially as a proto-Ultimates)

Chosen (ugh)

Kick Ass (ugh again)

Marvel 1985 (meh.)

Wolverine, but not consistently. And Old Man Logan gets an ugh as well.

Invincible (Meh, I felt like it was Ultimate Spider-Man but with fake Superman, and not as good as USM. Then again, what is?)

Walking Dead (Kirkman's best)

Anytime Geoff Johns has written anything Superman related, although boo to James Robinson and New Krypton, for that is ridiculous.

Ex Machina (in the middle of reading it)

Y: The Last Man (BKV's most ambitious, but I like Runaways best)

Pryde of Baghdad (good, if predictable)

Preacher (ugh. Garth Ennnis.)

Maybe eight Garth Ennis Punisher issues before I got tired of watching him come up with ways to torture people.

Dark Tower miniseries (pretty art)

Apocalypse vs Dracula (astonishingly, this is even worse than it sounds)

Ares miniseries (very overrated)

Astonishing X-Men (normally this goes under the heading of "all X-men", but I must point out that Joss Whedon wrote the absolute best Cyclops ever, with props to Grant Morrison for setting him up.)

Various Dr. Strange stuff, including the BKV miniseries and the JMS origin, as well as his original Ditko era stuff.

Superman/Action Comics at random times, but with only the Johns stuff being all that great

Seven Soldiers of Victory (Frankenstein rules!)

Secret War (probably Bendis' best eventish kind of thing, if not the best eventish kind of thing he ever did. Bendis is good at day-to-day comics, not events)

Secret Wars and sequels (confusing, no?)

Batman and Robin (good so far)

Red Robin (okay so far)

Umbrella Academy (never finished it, didn't grab me)

Geoff Johns' Teen Titans run (what alerted me to Geoff Johns in the first place, and shocked me by making me like clone Superboy)

Planetary (Probably Ellis's best, assuming the rumors are true and it actually is finished)

Portions of Doom 2099 (to try and get to the Ellis run. My problem is I have to read the whole series, I can't just pick it up where he starts, so I've never actually gotten to his run. It's the same problem I have with Hellblazer)

Most Marvel Knights stuff

Supreme Power and Squadron Supreme (the JMS versions, with Supreme Power being much better than the watered down Squadron Supreme. The Chaykin version should just be called Ultimate universe version 2.)

Sinestro Corps Wars

Some Wonder Woman stuff, mostly Rucka's run (not that it was very good, it's just what I read)

Ms. Marvel since Civil War (also not very good, and I've since dropped it)

Marvel Vs. DC (or DC Vs. Marvel)

JLA/Avengers (or Avengers/JLA)

All those crappy DC/Aliens or DC/Predator or Aliens/Predator or DC/Aliens/Predator/Terminator crossover books

Death and Return of Superman (ah, the 90s. It's like comic books were purposefully trying to be terrible)

Batman: Knightfall (better than Death and Return of Superman, but that's not saying much)

Batman: No Man's Land

Batman: Wargames or Warcrimes or any shitty series they did with War in the title

Probably other Batman miniseries that I forgot about

Most of the Final Crisis tie ins

Most of the Secret Invasion, Dark Reign, World War Hulk, and Civil War tie ins

Death of the New Gods (ugh. Starlin.)

Infinity Gauntlet and its myriad of myriad myriads (STARLIN! Learn a word besides myriad!)

Marvel Zombies (just the first one. That joke gets old fast)

Gargoyles (considering they release one issue every year, I often forget it exists)

Fray (meh)

Buffy S8 comics (better than S7, but honestly the series lost me when BKV did his Faith arc. I just thought it was completely out of character for everyone involved, and I've only skimmed the series since then)

Angel: After the fall (only the first two or three issues. I plan on giving it another shot though)

Doktor Sleepless (what the fuck is going on?)

Transmetropolitan (couldn't get past two issues. Ellis's biggest work, and the only one of his I can't seem to read)

A few other Ellis Avatar Press books, but they're all so confusing that I don't know what I'm reading

Exiles until Claremont came in and gutted it

House of M and related tie ins (Probably Bendis' second best event, but that doesn't mean much)
Agents of Atlas

NEXTWAVE

Ellis's Thunderbolts

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (s'okay)

Watchmen (epic and groundbreaking, but god is it slow)

Trials of Shazam (meh)

Random attempts to ever read Iron Man (failed attempts, all)

Omega the Unknown (weird and I never quite got it. I don't even recall if I finished the series)

Random attempts to ever read Fantastic Four (failed, with exceptions for Marvel Knights,
Ultimate FF, and possibly Hitch's new run)

Okay, there's more, but my head hurts and I can't think of any. If you happen to be some kind of super genius who can think of anything that's not on this list that I SHOULD read (not just something that I haven't read. There's plenty of crappy 90s era comics I haven't read and will never read. Same goes for a lot of older stuff. My nostalgia can't power me through old Captain America or Superman stories. Sorry.)

So if you can think of a good comic story, trade, or series that I haven't read, please tell me.

And I'll leave you with this, a list of things I already know about and plan on reading:

The rest of Morrison's catalog of books, notably Doom Patrol
Alan Moore's DC stuff, which I've just never gotten around to
The rest of Powers
The rest of Ex Machina
Possibly Ellis's Stormwatch and other Wildstorm stuff that predates Authority, as well as the current DnA Authority.
Peter David's Fallen Angel

And of course the collection of books I continue to read on a weekly/monthly basis as they come out.

But I need stuff that already exists, preferably in trade form! Help me, nerdlish readers! You're my only hopes!

EDIT: Holy crap! I forgot to put Alias on the list!

If you haven't read Walt Simonson's Thor run, you definitely need to.

Actually the first Miller Daredevil run is the setup for everything after that, and it's pretty good too. (Miller as an artist ony at first, and I can't at the moment recall who wrote it, but it was awesome.)

Cerebus, up to and including Church and State. Everything beyond that is just tedious, but until then it was great.

Haven't read that Thor, but I have read Miller's Daredevil. It's his best work to be sure, but I don't really love it and I think Bendis' run is better.

Never heard of Cerebus, so I'll check that out, thanks.

I've heard good things about the Darkhorse Knights of the Old Republic comic by John Jackson Miller and Brian Ching.

If you're into that sort of thing.

Hey Mac,just as i was about to criticise you for giving too much damn about medicine and not-medicine,you came to senses all by yourself.

Now,next time don't forget to complain about empire:total war's bugs.

Anyway, about Fallen Angel i can honestly say it's interesting.
I recommend The Sword by Luna Brothers and Star wars: Knights of the old republic(you did play kotor, right?!) from Dark Horse.

People love Casanova though i find it overrated and didn't read the last few issues.

Astounding wolf-man is meh but people seem to dig it.

Universal War from soleil and published by marvel in US.Ythaq can be considered too though none of those two can be called "great!".

Personally,i like iron man-extremis storyline.

And HULK from Loeb(that was for the medicine talk!-hahaha!)

The Adventures of Barry Ween, Boy Genius. I can't stand most of Judd Winick's stuff (like, for instance, making GL a guest-star in his own goddamn book) but Barry Ween is, IMO, fairly hilarious.

I know you read a lot of Vaughan - have you read his The Escapists? It's good stuff.

Recent read: Jonathan Hickman's Nightly News. Intentionally provocative, but very well done, and an intriguing use of graphic design in combination with art.

Richard Donner's Last Son.

Assume since you've read No Man's Land, you've read Cataclysm?

Umm... I love Brian Wood's DMZ and Brian Azzarello's 100 Bullets. Although 100 Bullets isn't that interesting, IMO, until the 2nd trade. Good, just nothing special.

There's probably more that I can't remember. I'll let you know if I think of it.

I'll check out Barry Ween.

I have the Escapists in Hardcover, particularly since I was a fan of Kavalier and Clay.

I've checked out Hickman's Nightly News, and the art and storytelling style is pretty interesting. It's what made me start reading his Nick Fury series and take an interest in him in general.

Read Last Son since that was a collaboration with Geoff Johns, if memory serves.

Cataclysm is the earthquake one? I think I read that one. Or maybe it's the disease one. I think I read that one too. Aside from Morrison's Batman, I tend to stick to just reading his event trades, and even then I'm usually disappointed.

100 bullets I tried a bunch of times and could never get into. It wasn't bad, it just like you said. Nothing special. DMZ I've thought about reading before, but something always kept me from it. I guess I should finally check it out.

I heard that Disney upped the liscensing fee for Gargoyles so it's done.

THe Faith arc was a fun story, and Faith doing the my Fair Lady thing was cool, but I agree the set up for it was OOC. I have a hard time believing the Scoobies would let Faith live in a rathole doing the jobs to bad for the nice Slayers.

The Angel series needs Cordelia.

As for good stuff to read look for Back issues and TPBs of the most recent Blue Beetle series. THe main character is named Jaime Reyes. Especially issues 12(or maybe 13) to 25. It even has a couple of cool GL moments in there with Guy Gardner.

The first four trades for Blue Beetle. End Game (Vol 4) in particular is brilliant.

Trouble with Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis, huh? Five years of perfect sci-fi politics and Hunter S Thompson. I'd say jump to Vol 3 as the first 12 issues (ie Year One and the first two trades) are more or less all single issue, random stories from a sci-fi future. Vol 3 is where the major arcs start.

The Losers by Andy Diggle and Jock, who also did Green Arrow Year One. Amazing stuff, and not a super-power in sight.

Hmmmm... what else? Agents of Atlas? Gotham Central? Oooooh!Gail Simone's Secret Six and her amazing run on Birds of Prey!

Transmetropolitan is one of those series that I always expect I'll get into one day and finally "get." I'm a big fan of Warren Ellis usually, so it seems like it should be a winner.

Andy Diggle I also like, and thank you for reminding me about The Losers. That was on my reading list a while back but I forgot about it before I got to it.

Agents of Atlas I've already read and liked.

Gotham Central is Rucka? Meh.

Gail Simone I'll maybe try. It's just hard for me to like anything even peripherally Batman related unless Morrison or possibly Johns has his hands in it. It seems that I haven't read too much of her (perhaps I've confused her with Louise Simonson, who I have long since decided to avoid and usually regret when I don't.) According to Wikipedia she wrote Deadpool at one point, and I've read and enjoyed some Deadpool stuff in the past so perhaps that was her doing.

I'll look into it, although I have to admit I've heard bad things about Secret Six.

I have to second the votes for Barry Ween and Gail Simone's Secret Six run.

Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is damn good fun, except the third volume that one just annoyed me.

Perez' run on the New Teen Titans in the 80's will always be on my Top Ten list.

Hell, Top Ten volume One and the Forty-Niner's GN are excellent as well.

Kevin Smith's run on Green Arrow is worth a look as well.

Carla Speed McNeil's (sp?) Finder graphic novels are fantastic!

If you are a fan of fantasy there's always Bone, Castle Waiting and the original run of Elfquest. I also like PS-238's take on super-heroic kids and schools.

By the way, speaking of Dr. Doom, does anyone know the name of the graphic novel where Doom apparently goes to hell and then winds up making a mask out of demonskin or somesuch? I've seen it mentioned on wikipedia but I've never actually read it, and I love reading about how an iconic villain out-evils the other evil guys.

(This is why Joker's one little scene at the end of Infinite Crisis is perfection.)

Elfquest? Mage: The Hero Discovered? Those are both solidly awesome and not on your list.

Powerpack is kitschy and very very 80s, but I genuinely enjoyed it. I know I read the first 100 issues or so of the Wally West Flash and really enjoyed it.

Off the top of my head, that's all I've got for printed western comics. If you add webcomics, I would also heartily recommend Gunnerkrigg Court, Order of the Stick, and Erfworld.

If you include Japanese comics, I'd suggest Nodame's Cantabile (because you don't get solid romance comics about college music students very often) and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (because of interesting art and lots of comedy, though the puns and literature references might be off putting).

Order of the Stick I've read. It speaks to that inner RPG geek in me. I will someday check out the others.

Powerpack I read some of a few years back when I was doing my "read all of Marvel ever." Mostly I read the stuff that crossed over into X-Men, which is some of the weirdest stuff ever. Wolverine in Mutant Massacre suddenly crossing over into Power Pack is some of the most jarring differences in writing style I've ever seen. It's like having Rambo cross over with Muppet Babies.

Flash I've read some of, mostly that which relates to the various Crises. I plan on reading Flash Rebirth once it's collected, and I've heard good things about several Flash runs. He's on my to do list.

Bit tricky to try and hold that list entirely in my head and then come up with ones that arn't on there that are important and/or good. But heres my shot at it and the summery of the comics and reasons. Considering the amount you've read most are unique ones.

Supremacy; by Alan Moore
Only two comics in this series I believe. The protagonist is an original hero based on the classic Superman Archetype. it's one of those stories that explores what a comic super hero IS. especially with Retcons being an actual part of the explained reality. Good storytelling with interesting ways of portraying things. Is probably something that appeals to certain people.

Earth X - Universe X - Paridise X; by Jim Krueger
An epic story compiling all of Marvels eras into one tale. Good art and interesting for those who like lots of detail and backstory but the pacing can sometimes get lost in the exposition. Word of warning each "book" is long and a bit on the expensive side.

Y the last man; by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra
Long and full of detail the story of the last man alive is brilliant. The art is realistic enough to be both beautiful and horrifying. The scope of the storyline ranges from the simple human feelings to the global conflict threatening to erupt from the remaining women of the world. Was surprised to see it of your list, have you glanced at it and decided no?

Wanted; by Mark Millar
If you've watched the movie then you will be suspicious of this one. The movie basically sucked. The comic book however is basically about a world where the bad supervillians won. The socioty exists beneath our civilzation and they are above the law as no-one has the power to go against them. The plot is about a kid with the power to kill who gets inducted into the socioty and there ways. it's good art and interesting story. The main characters all being villians is something that can rub people the wrong way.

Don't remember any of them being on your list. Hope they help and don't drain your wallet too much.

Salutations and so on,
Ravus

Ah, Supremacy. I always wanted to read that. I'll try to find it.

Earth X I feel like I read once, but I can't remember.

Y: The Last Man I read and liked.

Wanted I read many years ago. It's certainly better than the movie (loom of fate? What?) but I did have some issues with reading about a guy who beats and rapes his girlfriend, and I'm supposed to be happy for him because he's so free. It was an interesting twist for a story, but at the end of the day I was reading about a guy who was evil fighting with a bunch of other evil guys, with no real redeeming factors to any of them.

At least that's how I remember it. Like I said, it was years ago and I only remember bits and pieces of the story.

Second the recommendation way up top for Walt Simonson's run on Thor. Awesome stuff.

His run on Fantastic Four was a lot of fun, too, but definitely not to everyone's tastes. I do maintain that Reed and Doom's time-duel in I want to say #252 is a strong contender for coolest super-fight ever.

To round off the Simonson, I for one really enjoyed Tarzan vs. Predator At The Earth's Core. Tarzan, Predator and dinosaurs, with Lee Weeks art, what's not to like? If that doesn't sound like your cuppa, though, it definitely won't be so don't bother.

You don't like Ennis. I don't either, but I loved Hitman from beginning to end. It got a bit much with the violence, but I don't think as much as Ennis' other stuff. I have no idea if you'd like it, but consider it a recommendation from another non-Ennis fan.

Has anyone mentioned Astro City? I'm not as big a fan as many, and I haven't read everything, but I liked parts of it a whole helluva lot.

I can't think of any other long runs that haven't already been mentioned. For shorter stuff off the top of my head:

The Marvel six issue Mad Dog series that tied in to the short lived sitcom where Bob Newhart played a comic book writer. It was a double comic, with one end an absolutely dreadful grim'n'gritty story representing what the comic company wanted Bob to write, and the other end an absolutely hysterical campy series representing "classic" Mad Dog. You wouldn't like it unless you enjoy the 60's Batman TV show and/or parodies there-of, though.

Marvel's Destroyer series. I like me some over the top action with a sense of humor, and all incarnations of this series delivered that in spades. If you liked even one installment of the book series, it's worth checking out. If you can find it, of course, which you probably can't.

Quantum and Woody! Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick, how the hell did I forget Quantum and Woody?! Great characters, great story, and source of some of the greatest lines in comics history.

"Criminals are a superstitious and cowardly lot. I shall call myself... Woody!"

lol, you idiot, how come you didn't tell me about this AMAZING comics shit going on now? Namely Peter David making one of Liefield's characters gay and pissing him off? And them getting into an INTERNET FIGHT over it?

I've been, like, crying with laughter

Oh, um, supposedly Jack of Fables did a total turnaround and got really good in the past year or so, according to my friend who ALSO loved Fables and hated JoF (which really did suck).

A couple I have enjoyed have been,

"Wormwood, gentleman corpse" the art is good and the stories are funny, some violence but not really preacher levels.

"Crossed" is decent, very violent though (sort of a zombie apocalypseso there you go), but the story is pretty good, and I tend to jump over the violent bits, and focus on the character development which is pretty interesting.

finally, off topic, this is the first time I have replied to your LJ and I just want to thank you for your fanfic, it has been some of the best I have ever read, and I have really enjoyed it. though I damn you to the darkest pits of hell for not finishing the connected series yet

The Internet would like to recommend "Love and Rockets" by Los Bros Hernandez. The early years were a little shaky, and the Internet isn't overly enamored with the Palomar half of the stories, but the stuff by Jaime Hernandez is gold.

Every time I hear "Love and Rockets" I think of "Strangers In Paradise." I'm not sure why, other than they tend to share a fanbase. I lost track of SiP several years ago but I liked it up until then. It's very much a soap opera, though, which doesn't appeal to everyone. More like a Mexican soap opera, maybe, because that shit got out of hand pretty often.

Fables was on the big list. Is that Willingham? I stopped reading him because he never finished anything (Coventry and Pantheon being the ones that come to mind) but if I recall correctly he got his start at Comico with Elementals. I liked that one a fair bit, though I haven't read it in at least a dozen years. It went downhill in the second series, probably about the time he left. Up until then it was worth reading, though.

Why do I not seem Runaways Volume 1 on this list? Admittedly, the rest of thw series is mediocre at best for the most part, but Volume 1 is kickin'

Runaways, Fables, and Hellboy are the only western comics I pay any heed to. (don't take that as a preference for Anime- I don't read any Anime anymore, since no once carries Gundam - The Origin anymore.)

I know Ennis annoys you, but have you read his Dan Dare series for Virgin Comics? Brilliantly done and restrained. Ennis is good when he has a leash, give him too much rope and he goes off the rails.

Alan Moore's Top 10 and Moore's 49ers (which is a bit of back story to Top 10)
Dan Scrab's Scud: The disposable assassin. Now collected in one giant volume.
Richard Moore's Boneyard
Eric Powell's Goon
I don't remember who wrote it but Mister Blank was interesting.
Art Adams' Monkeyman and O'Brien
Brian Woods' Couriers and also Teenagers from Mars
Garth Ennis' 303(appropriately violent)
Warren Ellis' Dark Blue
Jeff Smith's Bone (A bit long winded at points but it has a nice pay off and is just damn nice to look at.)
And last but not least is Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo
